AWC Beginner Kayak Clinic - July 10, 2021

This beginner clinic will cover introductory flat water and moving water skills in a progression. We will cover basic hydrology and reading water, on-the-water safety, hazards and how to avoid or deal with them, types of paddle strokes and how to make them efficient, bracing, edge control and carving, ferrying, peel outs, and eddy turns. You’ll be practicing these skills in slightly faster water than the 550-Corrales stretch in Albuquerque.

We will be paddling the stretch of the Rio Grande near Embudo, New Mexico. This is a beautiful Class II stretch of the river and great to practice and learn skills on! Plan on finishing up and heading home around 4pm. The instructors will contact you with more details in the days leading up to the event, including when to meet, what to bring, and what to expect from your day.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we are taking extra precautions. We recommend that all participants follow CDC and New Mexico Department of Health guidelines and avoid close contact with other participants unless it’s absolutely necessary. If you are feeling unwell or show any symptoms of Covid-19 on or shortly before the clinic, please stay home. We ask that you please bring a mask in case shuttle drivers are more comfortable with masked passengers and will have extra hand sanitizer on hand.

Prerequisites: Be able to demonstrate the steps of a wet exit.

Clinic Cost: $40.00

ACA (American Canoe Association) Event Insurance: $10/person for non-ACA members (this is mandatory!!)

If you are an ACA member, event insurance is included in your membership. Please provide your ACA membership number below.
