AWC Open canoe Clinic - June 26, 2021

This open canoe clinic will provide instruction and paddling opportunities for beginners and experienced paddlers at Cochiti Lake. We will have a variety of canoes available to practice including a whitewater boat, an 18’ Kevlar ultralight lake boat, and a 12’ solo boat among others.

Beginners will learn how to safely enter and exit a canoe, paddling positions, and basic stokes. Other topics may include exiting and reentering the boat while ion the water, recovering from a capsize, and steering strokes.

Experienced paddlers can practice their boat control in a variety of craft and learn or practice draws, prys, and braces, simulating eddy turns around buoys.

Safety topics discussed will include NM lake windstorms, cold water and hot sun. We may get some practice paddling in the wind.

We will be paddling from the west boat ramp at Cochiti Lake. Depending on weather conditions we will be paddling either in the cove north of the boat ramp past a boathouse or south of the boat ramp at the end of the beach past a fishing dock. Participants should bring extra water, a hat, shoes that can get wet, and dry clothes.

With respect to the Covid-19 pandemic, we recommend that all participants follow CDC and New Mexico Department of Health guidelines and avoid close contact with other participants unless it’s absolutely necessary. If you are feeling unwell or show any symptoms of Covid-19 on or shortly before the clinic, please stay home. Feel free to wear a mask if you so choose.

Prerequisites: Independently turn from face-down to face-up and remain floating face-up while wearing a properly fitted life jacket. Be able to get in /out of a canoe independently.

Clinic Cost: $40.00

ACA (American Canoe Association) Event Insurance: $10/person for non-ACA members (this is mandatory!!)
